ABOUT BAYERO UNIVERSITY, KANO
Bayero University Kano (BUK) is located in Kano State, the Northwestern part of Nigeria.
The institution was previously known as “Ahmadu Bello College” when it was named after the then Premier of the Northern Region (Ahmadu Bello), and it was set up in 1960, where it was previously located within the School for Arabic Studies, Kano.
On 4 October 1962, it was given a new name “Abdullahi Bayero College” and became an officially established institution.
It was eventually moved to a temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel back in 1964, by which it admitted its first ten undergraduate students under the axis of Ahmadu Bello University.
These first set of students graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program.
During the civil war (1967-1970), the temporary site was affected by fire and had to be moved to a permanent site in Kabuga and Dukawuya gates on the Kano-Gwarzo road, and gave up its temporal site for a military hospital on the course of the war.
In 1975, the institution was then renamed “Bayero University College” when it now became a university college.
And in 1977, it got a university college status to operate as a full-fledged academic institution, with Dr. Mahmud Tukur becoming the first Vice Chancellor of the institution.
It disassociated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980.
Currently, the institution boasts about 4,618 academic and non-academic staff, 321 professors, and 7 international staff.
The current number of undergraduates enrolled in the school totals 37,214, with about 9,278 postgraduate students.
