Dominican University Ibadan, Oyo State, represents a significant educational milestone as the first university established by the Order of Preachers (Dominican Order) on the African continent. This blog post provides a detailed overview of the university, offering valuable insights for prospective students, parents, and educators.
Overview to Dominican University Ibadan
The Dominican University in Ibadan, Nigeria holds a special place as the first university established by the Order of Preachers on the African continent. This religious order, commonly known as the Dominican Order, traces its origins back to the Spanish priest Dominic de Guzman in 1216, with the blessing of Pope Innocent III. Over its impressive 800-year history, the Dominican Order has actively contributed to university education worldwide.
The foundation of the Dominican University Ibadan coincided with the 800th anniversary of the Order’s inception, making it a significant milestone in their rich history. Notably, the Dominicans have a long-standing tradition of intellectual prowess. Figures like Albert the Great and his student Thomas Aquinas were renowned scholars, shaping the intellectual landscape of European universities in cities like Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cologne.
In 1951, under the directive of Pope Pius XII, three members of the Order of Preachers, namely Fathers Edward Lawton, Michael Dempsey, and Arthur Kinsella, embarked on a mission from Chicago, Illinois, USA, to Lagos, Nigeria. Their purpose was to establish a Catholic Prefecture in Sokoto, now known as the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, covering regions like Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Katsina States in northern Nigeria. While in Lagos, they took responsibility for St. Patrick’s Church (later renamed St. Dominic’s) in Yaba, Lagos. During this period, the Dominicans were actively involved in running a Thomistic Institute, introducing young Nigerians to the teachings of Thomas Aquinas, laying the groundwork for future intellectual engagements with Nigerian scholars.
In 1968, the Dominicans selected Ibadan as the ideal location for the formation of Nigerian and Ghanaian candidates for the Order. Ibadan’s status as a historic city, known for its hills and red roofs, provided a unique advantage. It was home to Nigeria’s prestigious University of Ibadan and the Seminary of Ss Peter and Paul in Bodija, one of Nigeria’s oldest Catholic seminaries. This choice aligned with the Dominican tradition of establishing communities near universities, given their deep involvement in university education.
Ibadan presented opportunities for Dominicans to teach both at the university and seminary levels. Dominican Father Joseph Kenny, for instance, served as a Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Ibadan and at the Seminary of Ss Peter and Paul. This intellectual exchange paved the way for the future.
The meeting of African Dominican friars in Ibadan led to the establishment of the Inter-African Order of Preachers (IAOP), creating an umbrella organization for Dominicans in Africa. The IAOP decided to establish the Dominican Institute in Ibadan as a center for philosophical studies for Dominicans across the continent, with Professor Joseph Kenny as its pioneer Director.
In 1993, the Dominican Institute became affiliated with the University of Ibadan, offering a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. It opened its doors to students beyond the Dominican Order, showcasing its commitment to education. The Institute also offered theology degrees in affiliation with institutions in Rome and the United States, with many of its graduates teaching in various universities.
In 2006, seven years after Nigeria returned to democratic rule, the Dominican Order in Nigeria applied for a university license, seeking to transform the Dominican Institute into the Dominican University. This dream became a reality when the federal government of Nigeria granted a provisional license on November 2, 2016, marking the birth of the first university of the Order of Preachers on the African continent.
Today, the Dominican University builds upon the Dominican Institute’s legacy, offering accredited programs in philosophy and theology, and is poised to make significant contributions to education and intellectual development in Nigeria and beyond.
