- Implementation of Federal Government commitments to the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) and Multi-Lateral (Commonwealth) Agreements on Scholarship and Fellowship awards to Nigeria.
- Implementing Presidential Special Scholarship for Innovation and Development (PRESSID) and NYSC EX-Corps Scholarship.
- Collection, collation, analysis, publishing, and dissemination of data and other information on student matters, Scholarship, and Fellowship awards in relation to Nigeria.
- Supervision and monitoring the activities of Federal Government Scholars in Tertiary Institutions locally and abroad.
- Advising and coordinating States Scholarship Policies and Programmes through Annual Coordinating Committee Meetings of Federal and State Scholarship Boards Secretaries.

Federal Scholarship Board Application Requirements
To be eligible for the Federal Scholarship Board Scholarship, applicants are expected to meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be Nigerian citizens.
- Applicants who hold other awards are not eligible to apply.
- Only applicants who score 75% and above on the written Federal Government Scholarship Examination will be considered.
- All applicants (physically challenged inclusive) must be full-time students studying in any of the allowed fields in a Federal or State institution, Polytechnic, Monotechnic, or College of Education.
- Postgraduate studies applicants must have a first degree with a second-class honours division.
- Undergraduate applicants must have a CGPA of 4.0 and above on a 5.0 scale, or its equivalent, to be considered for the award.
- HND and NCE applicants must have a CGPA of 3.5 and above on a scale of 4.0
